The exhibition was located on the "Dreieck Reuterkaserne" triangle in close proximity to the castle square.
At the end of the exhibition, the complete dismantling of the "METRO unboxed" pavilion, which is due to be completed by 12 October, has been started. METRO also attaches great importance to the restoration of the site. The Reuterkaserne receives the same planting as before the development. Furthermore, three additional trees will be planted.
"METRO unboxed" opened its doors on 13 September 2017 in the afternoon.
In the following three weeks, until 2 October 2017, visitors could immerse themselfs in the world of METRO.
On July 13, the new METRO was launched on the stock market - a good opportunity to celebrate with the hometown of Düsseldorf and to say thank you.
As a longtime partner of the düsseldorf festival! METRO was therefore looking forward to contribute with its own exhibition at the renowned cultural festival. In a fascinating temporary building visitors had the opportunity to "unbox" the internationality, innovative power and passion of the wholesale and food specialist in a sensory journey.
During those three weeks, the exhibition was home to various events, from showcookings and panel discussions to performances by singer songwriters and acrobatic performances.

METRO unboxed was an exhibition that gave visitors the opportunity to experience the world of modern trade -from international specialities and sustainable logistics solutions to digital trends of the future - with all of their senses. As part of the exhibition, international METRO experts engaged in dialogue with guests about the many different aspects of innovative trade solutions that aid entrepreneurs and consumers from around the world every day, that enrich life in our cities and that facilitate answers to societal challenges.
In the framework of the düsseldorf festival!, METRO organised the interactive exhibition "METRO unboxed". In a pavilion built specifically for this purpose, visitors experienced the world of the new METRO with all their senses. The pavilion was integrated as an additional event location into the supporting program of the düsseldorf festival!. With the exhibition "METRO unboxed", visitors were invited to gain deep insights into the METRO world and at the same time also learn about tangible solutions to meet current and future challenges.
METRO unboxed featured 38 stations where international METRO experts presented current projects and solutions from various fields. Twenty-five selected countries where METRO operates each had their own stand. Seven core METRO areas, such as the real estate company METRO Properties and the sales lines for food service distribution (FSD), also introduced themselves.
Out of 35 METRO countries, 25 were selected to each have their own stand, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey and Ukraine. Seven core METRO areas, such as the real estate company METRO Properties, also introduced themselves, and the exhibition showcased the activities getting under way in Myanmar as well. Exhibitors also included the three food service distribution sales lines, the food and non-food provider Real and the METRO subsidiary HoReCa.digital, which specialised in the development of digital solutions for the hotel, restaurant and catering sector.
The new METRO stands for a clear focus on the wholesale and food sector. "To unbox" means that METRO unboxed the world of modern retail together with the visitors. The visitors were invited to experience exciting stories and new impulses; and to discover so far unknown products. Regional specialties from the most diverse countries awaited the visitors, but also sustainable logistics solutions all the way to digital trends of the future. What visitors could experience in this exhibition: how METRO in its role as an international wholesale and food specialist is shaping the exchange with its customers, business partners and the public: in a transparent, authentic and inspiring way.
The general public. The METRO AG cordially invited customers, entrepreneurs, consumers, schoolchildren, university students and anyone who is interested to explore the diversity of the METRO world and talk about it. In addition, the exhibition was meant to serve as a meeting place and discussion forum for sector experts, industry partners, associations, NGOs and guests from federal and state politics. Special tours and get-togethers provided the framework to engage in constructive dialogue.
Visitors had the opportunity at the 38 stations to discover the wide-ranging aspects of the wholesale trade and food industry − from international delicacies and sustainable logistics solutions to digital trends of the future. Presentations by METRO experts from around the globe, opportunities to talk with employees at the stands and tastings of select specialities from different countries rounded out the diverse programme.
On the occasion of the first Family Day at METRO unboxed on 17 September 2017, we publish our new free children’s booklet "A trip around the world".
Main character Mia Metro takes little readers on a tour around the globe and pays a visit to her friends at international METRO locations. The booklet will be available at various stands of the METRO unboxed exhibition and for download as a free PDF file.
